(Ir)reproducibility of Scientific Research in the Digital Humanities?

Reproduzierbarkeit und Replikationsfähigkeit gelten heute für alle quantitativ und/oder empirisch arbeitenden Wissenschaften als gültiger Standard, um die Qualität einer wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung und Nachvollziehbarkeit von Forschungsarbeiten zu sichern oder zu überprüfen. Für die Geisteswissenschaften ist heute durch die Digital Humanities eine neue Situation eingetreten: Die Anwendung quantitativer Verfahren durch Methoden der Digital Humanities stellt sie in neuer Dringlichkeit vor die gleichen Probleme wie bspw. die quantitativ arbeitenden Sozialwissenschaften im Hinblick auf die Forderung nach Reproduzierbarkeit und Replikation. Wir möchten in einem Pilotvorhaben, das auf einer Kooperation der Universitäten Leipzig und Trier beruht, die Grundlagen für Replikationsstudien in den digitalen Geisteswissenschaften legen und durch Best Practice Beispiele zeigen, dass es möglich ist, Standards für Replikationsstudien zu entwickeln und die Anforderung der Replikationsfähigkeit in den digitalen Geisteswissenschaften mit Unterstützung und in Zusammenarbeit mit Fachgesellschaften als einen grundsätzlichen Beitrag zur Qualitätssicherung zu etablieren.

Today, reproducibility and replicability are considered valid standards for all quantitative and/or empirical sciences in order to ensure or verify the quality of a scientific investigation and the traceability of research work. For the humanities, a new situation has arisen today as a result of the Digital Humanities: The application of quantitative procedures by methods of the Digital Humanities confronts them with a new urgency with the same problems as, for example, the quantitatively working social sciences with regard to the demand for reproducibility and replication. In a pilot project based on a cooperation of the Universities of Leipzig and Trier, we would like to lay the foundations for replication studies in the digital humanities and show through best practice examples that it is possible to develop standards for replication studies and to establish the requirement of replicability in the digital humanities with support and in cooperation with professional societies as a fundamental contribution to quality assurance.
