Das Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence soll die Beteiligung am demokratischen Leben in der EU und eine aktive Unionsbürgerschaft fördern. Es setzt mit einem Fokus auf jungen Menschen bei der Gesellschaft auf der lokalen und regionalen Ebene in ländlichen Räumen Ostmitteleuropas an. Das Zentrum trägt dazu bei, Lücken der EU-Forschung zu füllen, indem es die Einstellungen, Praktiken und Potenziale der EU-Bürgerschaft in der Peripherie interdisziplinär analysiert und dabei neue Methoden, Instrumente und Ansätze nutzt. Experten aus Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie, Zeitgeschichte und Ethnologie der Universität Leipzig und des Leibniz Instituts GWZO bündeln außerdem ihre Lehr- und Transferaktivitäten und intensivieren ihre Vernetzung mit Nichtregierungsorganisationen und Hochschulen in Ostmitteleuropa. Hinzu kommen eine öffentliche Vortragsreihe mit namhaften Personen aus Wissenschaft, Politik, Zivilgesellschaft und Medien, mehr als 30 Lehrveranstaltungen zu EU-Themen für Studierende in mehr als 50 Fächern, 12 Exkursionen, eine Ringvorlesung zur EU und ihren Bürgern, zahlreiche Bürgerdialoge, 3 internationale Sommerschulen, 6 Transferworkshops für Vertreter aus Politik, Zivilgesellschaft und Verwaltung in den Hauptstädten der Region, Hilfestellungen in 7 Sprachen für die lokale und Landespolitik zur besseren Vernetzung mit der EU-Politik, Hilfestellungen für die EU sowie 3 Bücher und andere Publikationen mit Forschungsergebnissen und Handlungsempfehlungen.

The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence aims to enhance participation in EU democracy and promote active EU citizenship. It focuses on local and regional society in rural areas in East Central Europe (ECE) with special attention to young people. The Centre contributes to closing gaps in EU research by analysing attitudes, practices and potentials concerning EU citizenship in the periphery in an interdisciplinary way, using new methods, instruments and approaches. Along with this, experts from political science, sociology, history and ethnology and from the Leibniz Institute GWZO cluster their teaching and transfer activities and intensify their cooperation ties with East Central European universities. The working packages also include a public lecture series with prominent experts from academia, politics, civil society and media, more than 30 seminars on EU issues for students in more than 50 study programmes, 12 study trips, a new lecture series on the EU and its citizens, numerous citizen dialogues, three international summer schools, six transfer workshops with stakeholders from politics, civil society and administration in ECE capitals, policy recommendations in seven languages for better EU networking for local and regional politicians, policy recommendations for the EU, and three edited volumes as well as other publications with research findings and policy recommendations.
